anime cosplay fans from all over Southeast Asia gathered here Saturday for the region’s biggest cosplay festival. Thousands thronged the two-day Anime Festival Asia, most of whom had been lining up in long queues to buy tickets before the show opened its doors on Saturday morning at the Suntec City Convention Center.

A cornucopia of anime-related products were displayed or sold by about 50 booths at the festival spanning an area of about 5,000 square meters. The region’s first cosplay championship was also held earlier in the day, won by participants from Singapore.

The highlight this year is Japanese virtual world idol Hatsune Miku live screening on stage outside Japan for the first time, singing three hits. An estimated 3,000 anime fans attended the concert, named ‘‘I love anisong,’’ which also featured a live performance by popular cosplay singer Shoko Nakagawa. They had bought concert tickets that cost S$108 (about $77) each for the nearly two hour concert.
